Il 26 aprile 2006, il Comitato dei Ministri del Consiglio d’Europa ha deciso di dedicare una giornata alla protezione dei dati, stabilendo che il giorno per la celebrazione fosse ogni anno il 28 gennaio. Questa data corrisponde all’anniversario dell’apertura della firma della Convenzione 108 del Consiglio d’Europa
